Jeff Pink, CEO of Orly and originator of the French manicure
I recently had the privilege of meeting the originator of the French manicure, CEO of Orly and trendsetter in the nail industry Jeff Pink! Jeff was in Dubai to attend the Beauty World ME exhibition, where he launched the latest 2014 ORLY collections – the 2014 Summer Collection (BAKED), the 2014 Fall Collection (SMOKY) as well as the Argan Oil Collection and the Rich Renewal New Exfoliating Scrub.
Jeff is a warm and welcoming gentleman, happy to sit and talk about his life in the nail care industry, reciting stories of his journey as an entrepreneur and enthusiastically discussing Orly’s latest range.
Jeff told me that, in 1975, he created a natural nail look to help screen actresses speed up the time between wardrobe changes. Simple, classic and feminine, this time-saving manicure accentuated the nails without ever upstaging the outfit. Originally called the ‘natural nail look’, stylists and starlets loved this new trend and it quickly spread through the fashion world. Once it hit the runways of Paris, Jeff knew he had the perfect name: the French manicure!
Jeff’s top tip for bridal nails:
Classic and simple is always a winner. Sometimes less is more. A classic French manicure complements the bride’s beauty without being overbearing – says Jeff.
Noting that some brides prefer to be a little quirky, he suggests painting the ring finger a different colour, or adding a few embellishments to finish the look. He recommends the Orly Blush collection, as well as their signature Kiss The Bride shade, which is perfect for brides.
Another fantastic addition to the ORLY nail varnish range is the Shade Shifter, which magically transforms a gel manicure into a tone-turning piece of live art. The colour transitions from light to dark depending on the temperature. For brides, this magic varnish would be great for a day-to-night nail colour option.
I was left inspired by Jeff after he offered me a few words of business wisdom too, stressing that competition is healthy, but to always lead from the front and focus on your own business growth and personality. It’s natural for companies to want to emulate and follow, and this is flattering. The important thing is to stay true to yourself and your business. Love it!
Jeff and his team gifted me the most awesome selection of Orly nail care products and varnishes – girly heaven! I can’t wait to try them all out soon and report back!
