A Nigerian Destination Wedding In Dubai: Grace and Awongo
Dubai is a beautiful place for a destination wedding; with a climate that is pleasantly warm with blue skies in the winter months and a multitude of world class hotels to serve as venues, it’s no wonder that so many people are opting to travel to the UAE to tie the knot.
Today’s wedding came to us via wedding planners and designers Save the Date and features Grace and Awongo who travelled from Lagos, Nigeria to hold their wedding at The Habtoor Grand Beach Resort & Spa last March. Over a hundred guests flew in from Nigeria, the US and Australia to share their special day. Below, Olga from Save the Date tells us how she coordinated with the couple across time zones and reminisces on some of the highlights of the day. Enjoy!
A Note From The Wedding Planner
Grace and Awongo have known each other for many years and even went to the same school. At the time, they were nothing more than classmates, but a few years ago, by coincidence, they met again and that was when they discovered the chemistry between them.
The planning began six months before the wedding. During this time we exchanged long emails and WhatsApp messages with the Bride. She was quite clear about her vision of her dream wedding, which gave us some directions on ‘do’s’ and ‘dont’s’.
In fact, she put a lot of trust in letting us plan her big day in Dubai, while she was thousands of miles away. We met for the first time just a few days before the wedding. Grace wanted a white theme, lots of flowers, an outdoor ceremony and a beach vibe.
We held the blessing ceremony in the garden. The couple got married under a lavish floral arch made of hundreds of roses and hydrangeas. As soon as they were announced husband and wife, the guests showered them with rose petals. Grace had five bridesmaids. They wore matching blue dresses and flower wreaths.
Before joining the guests for a wedding reception, the newlyweds wanted to have a few photos taken by the sea. For this occasion, we manufactured a surfboard with their names and wedding hashtag.
The main reception with cake cutting and toasts took place in the hotel’s ballroom. During the dinner, a large screen showed guests the live feed of the Instagram images taken under their special wedding hashtag.
As soon as the couple arrived at the ballroom, the mix of African beats began to play. For the first dance, Grace selected a song by Sade called “Your love is king”. Guests were entertained by a Nigerian DJ and the party continued until midnight!
