The Treatments
Moroccan bath – My full-day experience started with a traditional Moroccan bath conducted by a Moroccan therapist, Nisrine adding to the authenticity of the experience. I have only ever had one Moroccan bath in my life and that was whilst on Holiday in Marrakesh and although the results were amazing, boy was my therapist rough, so I was apprehensive to try it again.
Nisrine was very reassuring, admitting that the service can entail thorough dermabrasion, but she promised to only apply the pressure I was comfortable with. After I undressed and put on my disposable underwear supplied by the spa, the treatment started with a thorough olive soap wash, followed by the traditional black soap exfoliation and a 10-minute steam. **Word to self – do not apply soap to your face when you are left alone in the steam room, I did and had to call Nisrine in to help get it out of my eyes**. Once the steam was finished, I showered and was then asked to lay face down onto a heated marble slab. Nisrine then proceeded with the unique and traditional Moroccan treatment of exfoliation using a special glove with brisk movements. I was scrubbed from head to toe revealing a completely new layer of skin. It was an intense experience, but I’m not sure I’ve ever felt as clean and invigorated as I did afterwards.
Massage & facial – Once the Moroccan bath was over, I headed over to the massage room for a 45-minute head, neck and shoulder massage and express facial courtesy of my therapist Jonalyn. After being given an option of massage oils and walked through their benefits, I opted for Rosemary oil – known for easing muscle soreness. Jonalyn got to work on my tired muscles, ascertaining the areas of most need and focussing all her magical efforts there. Shortly after my massage, I was treated to the ‘Margy’s Monte Carlo Express Facial’. Since I have just hit 40 and feel my skin was looking a little lacklustre, I requested an anti-ageing and brightening facial.
My therapist started with a cleansing milk and toner, followed by a steam and basic blackhead extraction around my nose area. Not all clients are comfortable with this, so you can always ask your therapist to skip extraction if you would prefer to forego the extraction. Following extraction, a brightening mask was applied and left on my skin for 10 minutes, while Jonalyn massaged my hands and arms. Finally, she applied a serum and finished with a nutritive day cream.
My skin felt clean and soft and looked refreshed. The results were visibly noticeable the same day and I received quite a few compliments from friends that evening.
Hair treatment & Blow-dry – Once my body treatments were finished, I headed to a separate part of the spa to their hair salon. Kubra, my hairstylist, was friendly and welcoming. She took a few minutes to assess my hair type and issues and recommended the Hyaluronic Moisture Treatment which balances the moisture of the scalp and hair, prevents dehydration, gives elasticity, bounce, and shine to dry hair. The salon has state of the art equipment, including a reclining chair for hair washes, which also offers up a massage while you are having your hair washed – a welcomed treat!
Once my hair treatment was applied, I was left under a steamer for 10 minutes to allow optimum absorption of the products followed by a second wash and blow-dry. I requested a beachy wave look which I feel not many hairstylists manage to achieve without using a hot hair iron. However, Kubra did a great job using the hairdryer and a brush only and I was super impressed! My locks felt so clean and healthy that I left the salon feeling like I should enter the next Loreal conditioner commercial audition – no joke!
Mani/Pedi – Once again, the spa offers a dedicated section dedicated to nails only and it is top-notch in terms of facilities. My friendly nail technician escorted me to my the state of the art specialised armchair that resembled something out of a sci-fi film. I relaxed as she got to work on my hands and feet. The express mani/pedi was standard, but thorough, with a cut, file, polish, cuticle removal, foot scrub, hand, and foot massage, followed by my chosen colour. I was feeling daring, so opted for a berry red, finished off with a nod to Ramadan – a gold moon and star on my index finger. The salon has skilled nail-tech artists if you are looking for that little something extra.
Et voila! My full day of being spoiled was complete! Truly, a head-to-toe pampering journey that is not to be missed. This package can be availed all in one day or over four weeks should you prefer.
Price: AED 950 for six to seven hours worth of treatments.
The Verdict
I left COYA spa feeling like a new woman, revitalised, refreshed, and ready for a long-awaited night out with my girlfriends. The staff, the interior and the treatments were all first-class – A true hidden gem, located in the heart of Mirdiff. If I did not live so far away, there’s no doubt that I would be a regular, yet still, I’m already thinking of making an occasional trip for a full day of pampering – It is well worth it, as you get everything done in one day, in one location for a great price.
For brides looking for some generous pre-wedding pampering, or a luxury salon for the whole bridal party to enjoy, COYA Spa is the ideal spot. The current pandemic restrictions only allow for up to 6 ladies per group booking. The spa has a lovely waiting lounge area where the bridal party perfect for personalised décor to celebrate the bride post-treatments. The area can be booked out for group bookings only, based on a minimum spend of AED 2,000. This comes complete with an additional box of gourmet chocolates provided by Coya Spa for each guest in celebration of the occasion.
There is also the option for hiring a smaller private nail treatment room that can be personalised with décor for up to 2 guests – A good choice for a bride bringing her mum or best friend.
As well as the treatments I experienced, COYA spa also offers additional body treatments, lash extensions, waxing and more.
