When we were invited to review The Smash Room Dubai we must admit we were excited, but a little confused. After all, Bride Club ME is all about weddings, romance and love, so how would The Smash Room Dubai possibly be fitting for our readers? But both BCME Founder Rio and Contributing Editor Maja agreed that they could use a little stress relief and eagerly accepted the invitation. Little did they know, The Smash Room would turn out to be a perfect match for BCME! ….
What is it?
The Smash Room Dubai is the brain child of Hiba Balfaqih and Ibrahim Abudyak. Located in Al Quoz, it is a sanctuary for anyone to come and experience the freeing invitation to smash everything in sight. The items are sourced from junkyards across the UAE and all electronics are recycled after being smashed. Fun AND environmentally beneficial? Sign us up!
Location
There are two branches of The Smash Room Dubai. The original is in Al Quoz, and the newly opened branch is in Last Exit AUH bound. The Al Quoz branch provides air-conditioned rooms for groups of up to 6, while the Last Exit provides the ultimate adrenaline experience with both indoor and outdoor concepts. At both venues you can bring your own items to smash in the rooms, or there is a wide selection of objects at each venue.
Who should visit The Smash Room Dubai?
Now this is where it gets really exciting! Thought hen-dos were all about brunches and yacht parties? Think again! If you are looking for a unique experience for your bride tribe, we would highly recommend The Smash Room. In addition to hen-dos, there are a range of special events on offer from Anti-Valentines nights, birthdays and even divorce parties. There is even a weekly ladies night each Monday from 6pm where you and your friends are offered 10 free glasses (to smash, not to drink!), and an additional 25% of add-ons. At BCME we also think this makes a really unique wedding gift. Why give a couple another dinner plate, when you can give them the experience to smash one instead?
Packages
There are 5 packages available at The Smash Room Dubai. For individuals looking for some stress relief, ‘The Quickie’ is an affordable AED 99 for 10 glasses, while ‘The Smash N Dash’ gives you 15 glasses and 1 electronic (AED 175). ‘Two 2 Tango’ is perfect for couples as it gives you 30 glass items and 2 electronics. If you are a trio, opt for ‘The 3 Sum’ with a whopping 45 glass items and 3 electronics for AED 599. You can also design your own bespoke packages in a theme of your choice or even replicate a specific room to destroy!
The Experience (By Maja)
As we arrive at what resembles a container out of Mad Max with graffiti on the walls and dimmed lightning, we are asked to put on a netted protection suit, gloves and a helmet with a plastic visor covering our faces. We are then brought over to the side of the room where we are asked to select a weapon. Between the baseball bats, cricket bats, chrome bars, axes and sledgehammers, it’s a hard choice but I opt for the axe, while Rio reached for a chrome bar.
We sign the waver promising to only hit the items provided and not our spouses, and then each couple is lead to their own room and the music starts. As I nervously stepped into the smash room, the first thing I noticed was the large pile of broken glass and electronics at the opposite end of the room. The second thing I noticed was a bucket of glasses situated on a metal drum in the middle of the room. I glanced at my husband and he raised an uncertain eyebrow at me behind his protective visor and pointed at the bucket with his sledge hammer. “Ladies first”…
I grabbed a glass, looked around the room and tossed it at the wall. It broke in two. I grabbed another glass, this time hurling it with all my strength towards the brick wall. The shattering is surprisingly satisfying! Ten minutes later I find myself tearing through an old fax machine with my axe to Bon Jovi’s ‘It’s My Life’ blaring through the speakers, while my husband is throwing glasses in the air and hitting them like a baseball at the wall with a huge grin on his face. As far as an unusual date night goes, I have to say this takes the crown.
The Verdict:
Maja: I expected to have fun, but I didn’t expect to enjoy myself nearly as much as I did. Both my hubby and I loved it and I have to admit, I even found it quite romantic! I definitely felt a stress relief, but mostly I was surprised by how much fun it was to do it with my hubby. I can definitely see this being a great hen-do activity and I will definitely be back. Oh and did I mention that apparently it burns 80 kcal in 5 min?!
Rio: I haven’t had that much fun in ages with my husband! We are both currently a little stressed and overworked, and The Smash Room provided a much needed release of tension, but was also great to do together as a couple. We worked as a team, and egged each other on individually too. I highly recommend this as a fun alternative gift to give to a couple or for an alternative hen party activity.
