Kelly Lundberg’s Style Advice for UAE based Grooms
When it comes to planning what your wedding party are going to wear on your special day, it’s easy to overlook that person who is an equally important half of the couple, and who also happens to be the person you’re marrying: the groom. So many hours are devoted to dress shopping for the bride and discussing colours, fabrics and styles with the bridesmaids, that our poor groom tends to be a little neglected. After all, he has a right to look and feel his best too, and his choice of clothes can also reflect the theme of the wedding. Whilst some men may give the impression of not being too concerned about what they will wear on their big day, the bride can help by suggesting colour schemes and types of suit that he may not necessarily have considered. Below, our BCME expert panel member and founder of StyleMeDivine, Kelly Lundberg, offers her advice on how to ensure your groom feels just as special as you do. Whilst it’s traditionally the best man’s job to make sure the groom gets dressed on his wedding day, what the groom will wear has been determined very early in the wedding planning. Men’s fashion has notched up a gear, so just what should a bride think about when it comes to dressing her groom?
For a groom to feel his best, he will want to look like himself and feel comfortable on what will undoubtedly be a big day together. Fashion is fickle, and what looks good one year can look decidedly dated the next. Brides keen to avoid any unfortunate timestamp of their groom’s wedding attire would be best considering timeless suits and silhouettes to achieve that super sharp look and picture of masculine style. In short, it’s all about considering the finer points.
♡ Dress to Suit the Occasion
Unless you are going for a traditional look, morning suit or classic tuxedo, a two-piece suit oozes modern elegance. It’s very often the simplest and most striking option for a groom, and is especially eye catching in charcoal gray or a deep navy color. Whilst there is no rulebook that says not to wear black, and it remains a classic look that will never seem out of place, it’s probably a colour that’s not best to wear in the height of summer.
For those hot summer days or exotic wedding locations there is always much more scope with shades such as lighter grey, khaki and light blue making a very stylish choice. Best avoided (if you don’t want your groom to look like novelty item) are brightly colored suits; the same can also be said for neckties.
It’s going to be a long day, and you will want to pick a fabric that stands the test of time. A lightweight wool fabric will be cool in the heat and still look crisp at the end of the evening. Man-made fabrics can make a suit look shiny and it will also look limp by the end of the evening. Linen fabrics really are best kept in the cupboard or on the rails unless you are going specifically for the crushed beach look.
♡ A Perfect Fit
Depending on your budget, a suit can either be made to measure ‘bespoke’ or bought off the peg ‘ready made’. Regardless of choice, it is so important to make sure the jacket is a perfect fit; clothes that are cut close to the body will instantly give a defined look.
A suit jacket should fit on the shoulders, be snug but still with room to move and be long enough to cover a trouser zip. Modern suits tend to be styled with thin lapels. When choosing a tie it should always match the size of lapel and be tied so that it falls just on, or a touch above, the waistband.
The choice of shirts can be overwhelming; a clean white dress shirt is always a solid choice. Pay special attention to collars – you will want to make sure they sit perfectly; not too tight, too wide or too pointy! Leave the patterned shirts for guests. And yes, shirtsleeves can be seen below a jacket sleeve but only by just half an inch.
♡ Finishing Touches
It’s all about the details; the small things will perfect the finished look. To prevent the ultimate fashion faux pas, a suit should always be buttoned correctly. If it’s a two-button suit, fasten the top button only, and when it’s a three button suit only fasten the middle button. Always remind your groom to unbutton before sitting down.
Compliment the colour scheme with a matching shade by adding in a pocket square, but make sure it’s not the same pattern or fabric as the tie or cravat. Waistcoats or braces make for a statement look whilst a double-cuffed shirt is sartorial elegance, especially when paired with cufflinks (note to bride: the perfect wedding gift!).
Don’t overlook the groom’s shoes; as with the bride’s shoes, they should be comfortable and polished to perfection. Whilst lace ups are always a classic look, for a more updated fashion look think loafers. Just make sure your groom’s belt, if he’s wearing one, matches his shoes.
Whatever you choose enjoy your wedding day, as you fashion lasting memories together.
