Experience a heritage site in The Dolomites, Italy
Declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2009, The Dolomites are truly remarkable. Situated at altitude in the northeastern Italian Alps, they are easily accessible, being only ninety minutes drive from Venice. The climate of The Dolomites means that it is the ideal place for year-round adventures, with skiing, skating and sledding available during the winter months, and paragliding and hang gliding operating in spring and early autumn. If you love the great outdoors, be sure to visit the Nature Park of Ampezzo, which has over four hundred kilometers of paths to explore. Alternatively, hire a horse-drawn sleigh during the winter months for a romantic way of getting around. Those interested in history will also want to visit the Museum of the Great War Museum, which details key battles fought in the area by Italian mountain troops.
Where to stay:
The Cristallo Cortina D’Ampezzo is a stunning seventy-four-bedroom hotel spectacularly decorated with hand painted ceilings and impressive chandeliers. Furthermore, it’s only five minutes from fantastic shopping in Cortina. For those who really want a honeymoon to remember, a helicopter transfer and Butler service is available.
Luxury in London, England
London really does have it all, and if you’re more of a culture vulture than an adrenaline junkie, it’s the ideal place for a colder honeymoon. With a wealth of historical sites, museums and parks, you and your new husband can fill your days with sightseeing, shopping and strolls, whilst spending the evening watching a show in the West End or dining at Michelin-starred restaurants. London’s transport system means that you are always within easy reach of the different tourist attractions, whether they are historically significant, such as the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey, or strikingly modern, such as The Shard and the London Eye. It’s definitely worth visiting an array of boroughs, as each one has a different feel and gems to discover.
Where to stay:
Claridge’s Hotel is the epitome of luxury and ideally situated in Mayfair. Its rooms and suites are amongst some of the largest in the city, with some rooms even being designed by Diane Von Furstenberg. There’s a range of winter offers that would suit honeymooning couples perfectly, and the Afternoon Tea is definitely worth experiencing.
Enjoy an alpine climate in St Moritz, Switzerland
Located 1,856 metres above sea level in the Engadine Valley on the southern slopes of The Alps, St. Moritz is as famous for its ‘champagne climate’ as it is for being a chic and elegant destination. With over three hundred and twenty sunny days a year, the temperatures may drop below zero during the winter months, but the skies remain blue and the air breathtakingly fresh. Activities in the predominantly German-speaking area include skiing, snowboarding and hiking the nearby glacial landscape. St. Moritz has a rich sporting history, having hosted the Winter Olympics in both 1928 and 1948, and facilities remain world class. If you’re a fan of equestrian sports, be sure to check out the Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow in January each year, or check out the ‘White Turf’ horse race on the frozen Lake St. Moritz every winter.
Where to stay:
We recommend staying at the impressive Kulm Hotel, which combines traditional elegance with contemporary comfort. It boasts an open-air pool, five restaurants and even on-site activities such as ice skating and curling during the winter months!
Get your fill of culture in Madrid, Spain
For a cosmopolitan city that’s buzzing with energy, visit Madrid and be surrounded by art, museums and amazing food. As the capital of Spain, Madrid is steeped in history but still refreshingly modern. A multitude of experiences all rolled into one, no trip would be complete without taking in the works of famous artists such as Goya at the Museo del Prado, or people watching in Plaza Mayor. To unwind, take a relaxing walk through Parque del Retiro, and even rent a boat there. Often overshadowed by Barcelona, there’s actually an array of magnificent architecture, such as the Alcala Gate. If you and your new husband are party animals, Madrid’s nightlife will not disappoint you!
Where to stay:
Villa Magna is an exquisitely decorated hotel in the heart of the city, just five minutes from the ‘art triangle’ and only fifteen minutes from the Bernabéu Stadium (great if your husband is into football!). With one hundred and fifty rooms and suites, Villa Magna is next to El Corte Ingles – the world’s third largest shopping department – perfect for picking up some honeymoon treats by top designers such as Cartier, Dior and Jimmy Choo.
So, if you and your husband to be are beginning to crave something different; colder temperatures (particularly during the scorching heat of summer), new experiences, and being immersed in history and culture, think about having your honeymoon in a colder destination. Besides, what can be more romantic than cuddling up with your new husband, feeling snug and warm as you gaze out at the snow falling softly outside the window?
