Is There Such A Thing As The Perfect Wedding Dress?
Our real Dubai bride, Maja Lunsjo, has been on the hunt for the ‘perfect’ wedding dress this month. As is the case with many brides-to-be, this process isn’t always as dreamlike as it appears in the movies, and Maja actually began to doubt if ‘The One’ was even out there at all.
Read on to learn more about the trials and tribulations of Maja’s wedding dress shopping experience…and discover whether she eventually found her dream gown!
Everyone planning a wedding dreams about finding that perfect wedding dress. The one where your Mum cries and your friends all smile and you can’t possibly imagine walking down the aisle wearing anything else. This week I finally said yes to my dress, but under slightly different circumstances.
I had picked out my wedding dress a week after my engagement. My sister had found a picture on Instagram and sent to me, and I decided then and there that it was going to be the one. We tracked it down in a little shop in Sweden, and after a 7-hour flight home, I was stood in the shop with the dress on…and I hated it. It looked completely different from the image I had in my head, and it was itchy. I left the shop feeling disappointed but optimistic, determined to find “The One”.
This led me on my 8 months wedding dress hunt, during which I have tried on over 40 dresses in 5 different countries. I have probably tried every silhouette, shade, and material available, certain that when I tried on “my dress” I would know instantly. I even scheduled an appointment at Kleinfeld in New York because I was convinced that if anyone would have it, it would be Kleinfeld. Two hours and 12 dresses later, my friends and I found ourselves in a Manhattan café with no dress and very little optimism left.
As it turns out, “the dress” was waiting for me just a 5-minute walk from my Dubai apartment in a shop called Bride2Be. My friend Petra (one of my two Maid of Honours) was visiting me in Dubai so I made an appointment to try some dresses with her.
From the second I walked into Bride2Be, the experience was different from my previous appointments. Instead of showing me the racks of dresses and filling the changing room with items for me to try on, the owner Nadia offered me a cup of coffee and talked to me about my wedding plans. I told her about our outdoor ceremony and reception plans, and she gave me some suggestions of materials that were good for the heat, styles to avoid if I wanted to be able to dance, and several other little tips.
We then went through the racks together and she pulled out a selection of dresses that she said would fit my theme and ceremony plans, as well as my personal style. Within 20 minutes I found myself beaming at the mirror in a beautiful dress. I felt relaxed, like I was being listened to and most importantly, I finally felt like a bride. A few weeks later my Mum and sister came to visit and I took them to see it, and we all agreed that this was the one.
Looking back at my experience, the main advice I can give you if you are looking for a wedding dress is to find a store where you feel comfortable. Be as clear as you can with what you want, talk to them about your wedding setting and if you have a budget then make this clear too. I found a number of dresses where I thought it could be the one, only to have the shop assistant tell me that they had given me a dress twice as expensive as my budget. Stick to your guts and if you don’t like a dress, be honest and move on. Most importantly, make sure you go with people you love and enjoy the process!
I still don’t think that there is one perfect dress for each bide, but when I was wearing my dress I felt beautiful, comfortable and I could clearly visualise walking down the aisle to Chris. That, to me, is perfect.
